The House of Culture

The House of Culture is located in the Praça da República, in the centre of the city, in a building dated from 1538 that once served as the town hall.

The building was constructed next to the second Islamic wall and suffered several modifications throughout the second half of the eighteenth century.

Outside the building it is important to highlight the beautiful sixteenth century gallery that leads to the Praça da República and a “Manuelina” window from which we can see the Cadeia Street. On the portal we observe the coat of arms of the city with the knight and the banner, a masterpiece from the last third of the eighteenth century. Inside we can observe the noble room with paintings of Cyrillo Volkmar Machado and in the hall, that is used as the exhibition room, we can find a part of the Islamic wall that was discovered inside the walls of the building when it was lastly remodeled. Nowadays, as the House of Culture, this space hosts several temporary exhibitions and other cultural events.

Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built over the “Porta da Esquina” in the the sixteenth century. However the temple suffered several modifications during the following century, visible through the interior walls covered with ceramic titles from the eighteenth century. It is a magnificent building located in the centre of the city of Elvas. After its construction, in the seventeenth century, it served as a deposit of wheat, barley and hay as well as a bakery, in order to provide the army stationed in Elvas. The building is constituted by two floors. The first floor was divided into the stables and food warehouse. On the roof, we can observe six chimneys that corresponded to the ovens of the superior floor where, according to old sources, it could be produced, in twenty four hours, up to 28 thousand rations of “arrátel e meio” bread (about 500 grams). In the main courtyard, it is important to refer a small marble fountain. Over the entrance portal we can find the Portuguese coat of arms.
